Distant eons ago the Undying dwelled deep below the mountain in a city of evil called Carcosa. The spawn of humans and The Dark Ones, each was different in form and more nightmarish than the last. So wretched was their villainy that all the tribes of man rose up and summoned the ancient powers of the Earth to destroy this place. The city was flooded with a sea of molten magma and its inhabitants were burned and entombed in the living rock.
But they lived on for they are the Undying. Mangled, scarred and sealed miles below they slowly clawed free from their earthen prisons. One of them was buried closer to the surface and arose almost 2000 years ago into the world of men – a primordial horror called Argus of the Thousand Eyes. Still weakened from its labors the creature was defeated by a group of sorcerers and scientists called the Illuminati. So proud were they of this victory over Argus that they took as their symbol a great Eye sealed in a Pyramid to celebrate its return to a prison of stone.
In the last few hundred years the town of Whyshburg grew in the shadow of the mountain, a town that mined the stone from the ancient lava flow and carved it into amazing vaults and statues to fill the graveyards of the south. Most famous of these was Whyshburg Cemetery, until the banks of the Mongahela river overflowed and collapsed the crypts and toppled the spires that had grown there. Most of the people fled the town, as rumors of a spectral creature called The Collector roaming the sunken graveyard were told on moonless nights. Some said he was a servant of the Dark Circle, a secret order dedicated to opening the doors of the NETHERWORLD once more.
The Illuminati knew then that the people of Whyshburg had delved too deep, and that the Undying were digging ever closer. They settled the town with families loyal to their cause and evicted the last of the inbred Bostwick clan that remained. But over the years the Illuminati were distracted by more immediate challenges, like The Blood Night and The Rising of YS and abandoned the settlers to their fate. Over time the people renounced the Illuminati and became the Brotherhood of Rhomb, still dedicated to keeping the evil sealed below, but willing to take a darker path to achieve their goals.
They began to gather weird technologies and strange artifacts, selling the mystic rock from below the mountain to The Esoteric Order of Dagon, an unsavory group of merchants and traders who trafficked in such things. The power of Rhomb grew, but they became strange as their odd beliefs and practices warped them in body and mind.
Then the Dark Circle, foul creatures lead by The Collector, always at war with Brotherhood of Rhomb, managed to awaken Argus of The Thousand Eyes. The undying monster began to create horrific revenants called The Awakened, and send them to the surface world. To create these things Argus rips from its own body one of its many Eyes, and places it on the head of a corpse, AWAKENING it!
Now the Awakened are emerging from the caverns beneath Whyshburg to destroy the Brotherhood of Rhomb and ready the world for the return of Argus and the rest of the Undying. You must go to Whyshburg and help the Brotherhood, no matter how tainted they have become, and stop the Awakened before they reach the world of Men!
